We’re celebrating DSP Week by spotlighting some of our compassionate and hard-working Direct Support Professionals and Career Specialists. They’re the heart of our industry. Because of their dedication, we’re able to help hundreds of individuals with disabilities live fulfilling lives in central Missouri.
Today we talked with Danica Reynolds, DSP for Community Living.
How long have you worked for ACT?
Since May 2015.
What’s your favorite memory while working at ACT?
Having the honor and privilege of being surrounded by individuals I supported when I married my husband (another DSP). The individuals helped plan the wedding including selecting the music for the reception, selecting the bridesmaid dresses and groomsmen ties they wore, and writing short speeches they gave at the ceremony. Many individuals expressed that they had never been invited to a wedding, little less been asked to participate in one. It was perfect in every way.
What brought you to this line of work?
I first worked supporting adults with developmental disabilities at a day program in Southern California in 2012. I had no idea about this career field and answered an ad for “skills teachers.”
I love supporting the individuals we serve in having the most rewarding life they can have. I often repeat the quote “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”, and add that I am grateful to have never “worked” a day since 2012!
Why do you like working with ACT?
I’m lucky to work with a Program Manager and Director who share similar positive, passionate mindset about supporting the individuals we serve. It makes doing my job easy and fun!
If you had a superhero name what would it be?
The Weekend Warrior 😄
If you could have any superpower, what would it be, and why?
If I could have any superpower it would be to be able to understand and communicate with anyone in any situation.
Thank you, Danica and thanks for being a part of ACT. Your wedding was memorable! It was definitely a memory that many will cherish forever.
